The most revolutionary idea put forth in Protein Power is that the fat you eat has very little bearing on the fat you gain: in other words, we aren’t what we eat after all. Researchers have found that eating larger portions of protein in conjunction with severely reduced portions of carbohydrates causes people to burn the excess fat stored in their bodies.

What Is It?
The Protein Power regimen is based on the idea of controlling the level of insulin through a low-carb diet. Created by a married couple of MDs, Michael R. and Mary Dan Eades, the book “Protein Power” promises to make you “feel fit and boost your health — in just weeks!” By keeping carbohydrate intake low and protein intake high, your body will burn fat faster and not feed it. Unlike the Atkins Diet you are not allowed to eat as much protein as you desire.

The key to this diet is the drastic carbohydrate reduction for the initial phases of the diet - Phase 1 - Designed for those 20% and over their ideal body weight. These dieters reduce carbohydrate intake to a maximum of 30 grams per day. Phase 2 is for those less than 20% over their ideal body weight with a reduction to 55 grams a day of carbohydrates.

On the Protein Power diet plan, your daily caloric intake is directly tied to your protein requirement. Protein requirements are determined by evaluating the activity level of each individual. Active individuals may require as much as 1 gram of protein per pound lean body mass, while 0.5 gram protein per pound lean body mass will suffice for the inactive dieter.

Types Of Food
This diet demands that participants count all calories and eat at specific times. Protein and carbs should be spread fairly evenly between three meals and a snack, allowing only 50 grams of carbs a day.

Your choice of protein: fish, poultry, red meat, low-fat cheese (cottage cheese, feta, mozzarella, Muenster), eggs, and tofu.

Low carb fruits and veggies: leafy green vegetables, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, eggplant, zucchini, green beans, asparagus, celery, cucumber, mushrooms and avocado, (high in fat, but low in carbs).

Healthy fats: olive and nut oils, avocado, and butter.

Drink at least eight glasses of water per day. And a glass of wine or a light beer is OK, but their carbs count, too.

Exercise
This diet plan favors resistance-training, such as weight-lifting, because it stimulates the release of growth hormone more quickly than aerobic exercise.
