Follow Oprah’s Healthy Quest
Looking to follow Oprah in her quest for a healthier overall well-being? According to US Weekly, Oprah is currently on a 21- day vegan detox diet that bans animal products, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and gluten. Inspired by spiritual guru Kathy Freston’s book “Quantum Wellness,” Oprah is determined to become more of a conscious eater.
Kathy Freston believes cleansing your body through a plant-based diet once a year “gives the body a chance not only to do the deep cleansing work, but to reset cravings.” Freston has been getting much praise for her cleansing technique. Director of nutrition at DietTV.com, Toby Amidor says, “This is actually the best cleansing diet I’ve ever seen. Compared to most cleanses, which permit a few hundred calories a day, it provides three meals a day and is nutritionally balanced.” Ashley Koff, LA-based dietician, also commends the plan for supporting conscious eating and meditation.
The plan allows for three meals a day and two snacks. Sample recipes are available in the book Quantum Wellness ($13 in stores). A taste test of what a day in the life of this vegan diet entails is below:
Breakfast: Seasonal fruit parfait (with layers of soy yogurt, granola or crunchy cereal and fruit)
Snack: Pita wedges with hummus
Lunch: Spiced southern tofu wrap (tofu, spinach and steak seasonings in a whole-grain tortilla) with kitchen-sink salad (lettuce, veggies, nuts, beans)
Snack: 1 ounce bittersweet chocolate
Dinner: Garlic portobellos over summery quinoa (cooked with peppers and asparagus)
Oprah had doubts going into this diet of giving up sugar, gluten, alcohol, meat, chicken, fish, eggs and cheese, but has been surprisingly satisfied with her meatless meals. Even at restaurants she claims to have no problem resisting those garlicky simmering steaks!
Though there are many benefits to cleansing the body there also comes some disadvantages. Amidor warns dieters of feeling fatigued from the removal of caffeine from their diet and that weight loss may not be able to be maintained due to the short 21-day plan. Koff also notes that a vegan diet isn’t for everyone and may not be suitable for some dieter’s digestive systems.
The article doesn’t mention a workout routine, but talks about meditating as a way to clear the mind for a complete mental transformation.
Editor’s Comments: Just like any machine, the body needs to be cleansed on a yearly basis to be in the best shape possible. Other detox diets seem skeptical and weary dieters away by only allowing liquids as a way of cleansing the body. Kathy Freston’s detox approach sheds a new light to restoring your health by allowing three delicious well-balanced meals and two nutritious snacks. There’s no calorie counting… just pure nutritious foods that will be sure to rev up your body for a complete mental and physical health makeover
