Proper Diet Can Help Overcome Jet Lag

airplane jetlagIf you’ve flown, you’ve probably encountered the effect known as jet lag. But what is jet lag? Jet lag occurs when you force your body through a different time zone before it can adjust. For example, if you left Los Angeles at 2pm you would arrive in NY approximately 7pm (LA time) but it would be 10pm NY time.

Your body wants to go to sleep but your brain still thinks it’s too early to sleep. So this can make you feel tired, dizzy, disoriented and makes it hard to function throughout the day.

Everyone has their own tricks to overcome jet lag but here are a few tips to help you overcome jet lag when it comes to eating properly on the flight.

1. Watch What You Drink
Flying at 35,000 feet can literally suck the water out of you. Stay away from drinks that can dehydrate you such as coffee or alcohol and drink water throughout the flight. While it may cause you to go to the lavatory often, it’ll help keep you hydrated and the walk to the lavatory can help with increased blood circulation and avoid deep-vein thrombosis.

2. Watch What You Eat
Most airplane foods are loaded with salt. You can avoid salt (which also dehydrates you) by bringing your own food. Need to sleep on a flight? Turkey can help you snooze easier on the plane.

So buckle up and enjoy your flight and hope these tips help you avoid some jet lag!
