Caveman Diet Keeps Your Heart Healthy

caveman dietWant to keep your heart healthy? Then learn how to eat like a caveman! But what does a cavman diet consist of? Berries, nuts, lean meat and fish are what cavemen used to eat and having your diet consists of these ingredients can help you lower the chance of a heart attack or stroke.

But eating like a caveman doesn’t just lower the chances of a heart attack or stroke, it can actually help lower blood pressure says researchers at the Karolinksa Institute in Sweden. They discovered that besides keeping our heart healthy, it can lower blood pressure, reduce the risks of diabetes and can help you lose weight.

Back then, there was no preservatives, sugar or any ingredients that wasn’t natural. So our bodies are made to absorb best food that is natural and thus healthy which then leads to weight loss also.

To test this theory, researchers tested the caveman diet on volunteers who ate nothing but caveman rations for 21 days. So they ate foods such as fresh fruits, berries, vegetables, lean meat, unsalted fish, and etc. There was no dairy products and other banned items were beans, salts, pasta, peanuts, alcohol and sugar.

After the 21 days, these volunteers were tested for body mass index, blood pressure, cholesterol and those measurements were compared to before they started the diet.

What were the results? On average, there was a weight loss of five pounds and their body mass index dropped also. Blood pressure was lowered and the level of a certain chemical (that can lead to blood cots) was significantly lowered by 72%.

These results were highly favorable for such a short period of time but Dr. Per Wandell warned that lack of certain food items (that were not allowed in their research) such as diary products could impact overall health. Dairy products contain calcium and cutting those out could lead to osteoporosis later in life.

This study was published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
